SONNET- A poem consisting of 14 lines, 10 syllables in each line

By Allie Fogg

ON THE PROWL

The cat lurks around during the night

It searches and tries to find its dinner

It sees other cats looking to the right

They compete now, who will be the winner?

Who will find all of the mice and rats?

For these would be such a good meal

After all, you know, these are city cats

And these cats finding food is a big deal.

Being out on the streets is no good life

They need owners, someone loving and sweet

Or 2 someone’s, a husband and his wife,

If this happened, it would be such a treat!

But tonight the cats continue to roam

Hoping that someday they will find a home

OMS essay

The Old Man and the Sea essay assignment
By Allie Fogg
B-G English 9B

In the book, The Old Man and the Sea, Santiago, otherwise known as the old man, is one of the main characters. Santiago is a life long fisherman, who is also very dedicated to what he does. In this book, he struggles with several situations. These include trying to catch the Marlin, living the lifestyle that he does, and having nobody but the boy.

The first struggle that Santiago faces is the way that his lifestyle is. Santiago is very poor and his only source of income is the money that he makes by selling his fish and also, if he doesn’t catch any fish, then he has no food to eat! That means that if he doesn’t catch any fish, he’ll starve. On the first of the book, it says, “He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish.” This quote tells you that Santiago has gone about two-and-a-half months without catching anything!

Another struggle that Santiago faces in the book is, and probably the most the most intense one, is trying to catch the Marlin. When he tries to catch the Marlin, it puts up a fierce fight. It goes back and forth, against the current, and Santiago is very desperate to catch this Marlin. On page 52 of the book, it says, '"Fish", he said softly, aloud,, "I will stay with you until I am dead."' The reason for this is probably because of a pride reason. He has been fishing a long timeandreally wants to catch this fish! Also, Santiago is an old man, and this could be his last chance to go fishing and catch something big, so he wants to catch it really badly. In the book, Santiago hasn’t had luck on his side and has gone a long time without catching any fish.

The third struggle that Santiago struggles with is the fact that he is alone.Santiago lives all alone where he lives. He lives all alone and has no family or friends. The only person that he has is Manolin, the boy, whos mom doesnt even want him to be around Santiago because hes crazy, and for various other reasons. The bot is like Santiago's little helper, but isnt with him all of the time. On page 56,Santiago says,"'I wish the boy were here andthat i had some salt."' That is one example of how Manolin helps Santiago. Another example is on page 62 and says "If the boy were herehe could rub it for me and loosen it downfrom the forearm, he thought. But it will loosen up." this was when Santiago got a cramp. All of those are examples of how Manolin helps santiago, but i think that Santiago also wanted Manolin with him because he was lonely. The old man has practically no one but himself to talk to, and he enjoys spending time with the boy and talking to him.

All of those are examples of struggles that Sanitago faces in the book, The Old Man and the Sea. He struggles with trying to catch the Marlin, living the lifestyle that he does, and having nobody but the boy. Those are some situations that are hard to overcome, btu Santiago still seems alright!!

THE END!! <3

A Change for the Better

It was a quiet morning in Bronx, New York. Nicholas had just woken up to the sound of traffic outside, cars honking and people yelling. He rolled over and looked at his alarm clock; 9:16. It was a weekend, but he figured that now that he was awake he’d just stay awake. He got up out of his bed and went to the bathroom and got dressed. Nicholas lived all alone in the city, had a few friends here and there, but was very lonely. He had no family because they all had died in a plane crash on their way to Cape Cod for a vacation. He had stayed home because he wasn’t feeling well, and some of his family members were avaricious, but he still missses them. Occasionally he would wake up in the middle of the night screaming because even though it was 6 years later andad even though he was now 21, he would have nightmares about the accident. Although he had gone through so much, he was still stalwart.

Nicholas didn’t really like the city that much. There were always bevies of hoodlums in the streets. It was too noisy and he had always dreamed to live in the country. To have a farm out far, maybe in Oklahoma. A big farm with chickens, pigs, cow and horses. A ranch like the ones that you see in old movies. Most of all, he wanted a place for himself, somewhere quiet and peaceful. Not with people running around, yelling and honking their horns. He had started to save up his money, too. He had a job at an art gallery, and was a very ledgerdmain artist. Art had always been a hobby of Nicks. He liked to draw and paint pictures of people. In his living room he has a picture that he drew of his family.Since Nicholas didn’t work on the weekends he didn’t have to rush and get ready. He threw on a pair of jeans and a tee-shirt, and plopped himself on the couch to watch the news. “Oh, look. Another robbery! Don’t you just love the city?” He watched them talk about some lady’s house burning down, and then turned it off.

He was hungry so he decided to go to the local diner to grab a bite to eat.The diner that he went to was called “Egg and I”. It was his favorite diner! He had known everyone there, but today, there was a new girl. She quickly seated him and took his order. “And what can I get for you today?” she said in her most polite voice. He told her “Ill take the number 6 with 3 hash browns and a glass of Orange Juice, please.”He ordered his food and then ate it quietly. He noticed that the girl’s name was Erin, and then called her over. "Yes, what can i do for you?” she asked. "Would you care to accompany me later on this evening?” he said trying to sound as sophisticated as possible. "Like a date?...Well I get off of work at 5 so pick me up? Then she walked away. He couldn’t believe that shed actually said yes!"I had just met the girl, but I can just feel something, she’s special!” he thought. Nick left the money on the table and left. Nicholas then looked at his watch.

It was about noon. What to do next, he thought. He decided to go back to his home. When he got back home, he couldn’t stop thinking about the beautiful Erin. How her long, straight brown hair shined, how her blue eyes glimmered! Her figure was good, not too pudgy, yet not too gaunt. He figured since he kept thinking about her, that he had drawn a portrait of her. So he got out his pencil and paper and got to work-for about 2 hours!! But he wanted to make it deftly, and capture every last stunning detail of her, and make it with extreme effort and love. Wait-did he love her? Was this love at first sight? Did she love him, or was she just saying yes to him to be nice? Oh, so many things were racing through Nicks head; he couldn’t wait to see her! It was as if God had bestowed her upon him, for whatever reason!

Nicholas didn’t know what to do next. Even though it was only abound 2 o'clock, he started to get ready for his date. He took a shower and got all nice and spiffy. When he was all done getting ready he looked at his clock and it was 4:45. He then got in his car and drove to go pick her up.. So he got there and honked his horn once and she ran out. They drove back to the house and watched a scary movie on the couch. At first, their relationship was a bit inept, but soon it changed.

When the movie was over Nick decided to show Erin the portrait of her, and she was blown away!"I feel like I’m looking in a mirror!".“Well, I feel like I’m looking at a princess!" he said, looking into her iridescent eyes.Even though she thought that his line was corny she smiled. So Nick cooked spaghetti for dinner. Erin loved it. One of the things that Nick loved most about Erin was how benign she was! Therer was nothing vague about her; Nick felt as if hed known her forever and knew everything about her.

Then a little bit later she fell asleep on the couch. He laid down next to her and fell asleep with her. The next morning Erin had the day off so the new couple spent it together. Nick showed her some of his artwork, took a trip to Nick's art gallery, and both were iquisitive about one another so they talked. He started to tell her about his dream to live in the country and, surprisingly, she had always wanted to live there too! So they decided that if all goes well in their relationship and they’re still together, they’ll raise enough money to fulfill their wishes!

So after a few years of being together they got married, and after working extra shifts, the two of them raised enough cash, and bought a house out in Nebraska. It was a brown house and a big red barn, mostly bovine, but filled with other animals too! They had a happy, tacit relationship. Soon after, Erin got pregnant with a little baby girl and named her Isabelle. Their lives were perfect and complete. Everyday felt like a hiatus! Erin became a stay-at-home mom, and Nick created his own art studio in the house. And the rest was just a big happy ending!!!!!!!!!!!!THE END!

Outside Reading Book Essay

For my outside reading book, I read The Song Reader by Lisa Tucker. The genre of the book is realistic fiction. This book is about two girls living in a small town in the south. One with the gift of song reading, or telling people's emotions by the songs that are stuck in their heads. Mary Beth is the talented older sister, taking care of her younger sister, Leanne, after the death of their mother, and the abandonment of their father. But one lady named Holly comes to Mary Beth for elp. She is a very depressed woman, so Mary Beth figures out. She is told to confront her father about her molestation that he had done to er years back when she was a child. This is the reason for her depression. But her being as depressed as she was, she decides to try to commit a suicide attempt. She lives, but the result? A coma. And then Mary beth becomes depressed because everyone blames the accident on her. Meanwhile, Leanne is just trying to survive her teen years, upset by Mary Beth's depression, and trying to reconnect with her father who has now come back after years of being gone. She's also trying to have a relationship with Mike, Holly's son. In the end, Holly comes out of her coma, Mary Beth is no longer depressed, and Leanne goes to prom with Mike.
A quote about the book from the back of the book is "An achingly beautiful and bittersweet tale."
by John Dufreshe. I agree with this quote because there are many good and bad moments in the book.
This book was written in first person. Everything besides the dialogue is in Leann's point of view. She is the one who is telling the story.I would say that there is definitely more narrative in the story than dialogue. The writing style in this bookis similar to the kind in The Pearl because there is only dialogue when something important is being said or described.
A quote from the book is on page one of chapter one. It says "(song reading) is kind of like palm reading, but instead of using people's hands, she used music to read people's lives." I picked this quote because it is describing song reading from Leann's point of view.
I really liked this book and I would totally read another book by the same author. We both have interests in music, so we are similar. I can relate to Leann, how she's just a regular teen growing up, dealing with boys. I could totally see us being friends. I enjoyed reading this book and would/will recomend it to anyone!

Value Essay

In my life, there are many things that i love, that are important and i cherish. My family, friends, clothes, pets. But the most important items that I love, I wrote about. I chose to write about my Ipod, and going to sleep.
For my item of value, I chose my Ipod. I love my Ipod so much! It is my baby, and I listen to it constantly. It is also very pretty- it's all black, and it's case is all pimped out! It's clear with black and pink hearts. I have a ton of music on it. I listen to all types of music. Rock, pop, alternative, r+b, and the list continues. I love my Ipod so much because music is such a huge part of my life, and without music, I do'nt thin that I wouldn't be able to live!!
The other thing that I wrote about was a priceless moment. It is going to sleep. I love the feeling of relaxation as I get into my routine. I put my pajamas on, usually a tee-shirt and sweatpants. Then I go downstairs to say goodnight to everyone. About ten minutes later I go back into my bedroom. I crawl into my bed, all warm and cozy. I usually turn on my Ipod to help me get to sleep, then I turn off my light that is on my nightstand. I think about everything that has happened that day, and what will happen soon, and then soon I fall asleep.
I love both things so much, and both make me feel relaxed and happy. If I had to choose which thing that I loved more, my Ipod or going to sleep, it would be really hard! But I think that I would choose my Ipod. It was kind of expensive. Then again, if you could put a price on my feeling of going to sleep, I think it would be expensive as well. But my Ipod also helps me fall asleep, and it is basically my life. So that is why I would pick my Ipod!
